A garden that's bursting into life with toys
The separation of genders begins when children are young. Boys and girls grow up playing with toys designated for their sex. Although most of the time it is not purposely done to harm their
children, mothers tend to make their kids play with the types of toys that are gender
oriented. For example, if a young girl was playing with action figures and
trying to make them “kill each other” a mother will most likely be appalled
with her behavior and hand her some Barbies. Princesses and dolls are for the
girls to nurture their caring personalities and action figures and Hot Wheels represent power and is to bring out the manliness in the boys.
Even in school, teachers point out to students that
statistics show girls perform better in English and history while boys tend to
excel in science and math. However, according
to studies, the “statistics” teachers are talking about are incorrect. Girls
actually perform better in all studies compared to boys. Telling each gender
that they are naturally worse a certain subject discourages them from pursuing
it. For example, in the Verizon Commercial, a young girl loves science but due
to the influence of the need to be “pretty” she is finally pressured into
caring more about her beauty and neglects her intelligence.
If a girl wanted to play with superheroes, cars, Legos
and action figures, her friends most likely will not want to play those nor would
the toys be available in the right “color” for her so she would have to resort
to playing with boys. But God forbid a girl play with boys in elementary
school. She might become a tomboy! Or even worse, get…cooties! Because, well of
course boys have cooties so girls can’t play with boys because then she too
will get cooties.
Even the little YouTube famous girl, Riley can see the
marketing scheme. Riley is in the “pink and girly” aisle of the toy store and
she asks, “Why does all the girls have to buy
pink stuff and all the boys have to buy different colored stuff?"
She’s right. Why do girls HAVE to buy pink things? The truth is, they don’t.
Girls do not have to buy pink things and boys do not have to buy blue things
but that is just the way society has differentiated the genders. Just imagine
the types of questions you would get if you painted your new-born son’s room
pink.
Hey Kathie! I love how you included so many videos to help the reader understand your point! I like how you brought up the point of how society has decided that is something is blue, it is for a boy and if something is pink, it is for a girl. There is no doubt that companies are influencing children on which toy to play with based on colors, along with many other things. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI loved your use of the two videos! I think the one of the young girl specifically in the pink toy section really shows how society has taken control over what young people can do.
ReplyDeleteHello Kathie Lee, I really like how you conveyed societies scheme to differentiate genders. The videos helped get your point across very well. Superb job Kathie Lee.
ReplyDeleteNice post! I remember seeing that Verizon commercial and being really sad that she was pushed away from science just because she was a girl. I think it is great that Verizon is trying to make a change. Using that video really helping me understand your point in how split genders are.
