Forget what we're told...go ahead and wear whatever you want

Deborah Tannen seemed to really dislike the term “mark” but being “marked” does not necessary have to have a negative connotation. The way someone dresses can give off a vibe of his or her personality. Girls are easy targets to mark and therefore judge and critique, but her style and personality can also really shine through while boys have a smaller range of flexibility. Instead of just skirting around the issue, let me take this weekend for example. (ahaha do you get my skirt pun)

Almost everyone (hopefully everyone, c’mon people you only have four of them so you might as well go to all of them) went to homecoming this weekend but it was probably the way everyone dressed that mattered more than the way they danced.

When everyone arrives at pictures, the males are dressed quite similarly; normally all the guys are sporting suits with ties/bow ties that match their dates dress (if he has one). Out of the hundred of boys that attend homecoming, only a handful will opt for a different style that ranges from suspenders, fedoras, and printed pants.

On the other hand, the variation of dresses between girls is infinite; short dresses, long dresses, high-low dresses, lace dresses, tight dresses, party dresses, printed dresses, floral dresses, peplum dresses, and even pantsuits and rompers, the possibilities are endless. On top of that, girls also have varying hairstyles, shoes, purses, and nails; all of which can describe her personality or the “look” she is going for. A French manicure can mean she is sophisticated and classy while red lipstick can signify a girl is bold and confident. Some girls do not necessary care much for beauty and may just wear a simple black dress but who says she can’t still rock it and have an amazing night.

Although very few girls do, there are some empowered ladies out there who are bold enough to wear a romper or pantsuit. Those girls express their strong “I don’t need no man” belief or just because she’s an amazing individual that does not consent to the expectations of society.  Typically, if someone saw a girl dress like this, they would think she is a feminist (because God forbid a girl wear anything that isn’t a dress to homecoming. Am I right ladies?) but what is so bad about being identified as a feminist?

  1. As for the question, I think that some people haven't opened their eyes enough to see what feminists are trying to create or on the other hand just don't know what the word "feminist" means and interpret it in different ways. As the for HOCO,I believe that its awesome that girls have the guts to try some thing out of the norm more often than guys that usually stick to the standard.

  2. I thought of that same concept as I was reading the piece. What if you want to be marked? That side definitely needs to be considered.

  3. This was so clever how you connected homecoming to this topic! I agree with you how we should wear whatever we would like to wear without having society put a title upon us.

  4. Men may have fewer options to choose from when dress, but this also makes it a sort of competition for whoever has the best color scheme and fit to their outfit. There seems to be an infinite number of beautiful dresses in all different shapes and fits, but if someone doesn't like how they look in a suit, they choose to fit in uncomfortably or stand out.
